Conisbrough Castle

As part of Form 7’s study of the Medieval period, they visited Conisbrough castle to look at the architecture of the keep and bailey.

Girls looked at the remains of the barbican, gatehouse and bailey to work out what everyday life was like in the castle. They looked at the kitchen, buttery, the Great Hall, and the keep.

The girls learned of Conisbrough’s royal links to Henry I, William I and William Rufus, and the details of everyday life in medieval Conisbrough.

Girls comments!

'The peasants were told who they had to marry. Sometimes they were handcuffed together for 5 months too make sure they learned how to get along. We were horrified when the guide told us, we couldn’t believe it!'

''The children had to sleep on mattresses on the floor in their parent’s bedroom.'

'Conisbrough castle is a brilliant place with amazing features. It has an inside toilet called a garderobe. It is just a hole in the castle wall … there was a very cold draft!'

'The barbican was a murder hole. Hot sand was poured onto invaders, and there was also a deep pit that soldiers fell into.'
