Year 11 GCSE Art Girls view Sotherby's Sculptures at Chatsworth

In October the Y11 Art GCSE group went to Chatsworth to view the Sotheby’s sculpture exhibition. There were twenty sculptures on show spread around the grounds These pieces included Marc Quinn’s ‘Kate Moss’ sculpture called Sphinx and Damien Hirst’s impressive and controversial 14ft pregnant female sculpture entitled ‘The virgin Mother’. It was a beautiful autumn day, perfect conditions for viewing and sketching the artwork. The girls were given a tour of the sculptures. They were told that each piece was for sale (if we had a spare million or two!). A source informed the party that two sculptures had been sold. One for $100,000.00 and the other for three million dollars, although it was not confirmed which pieces had been sold.

The art trip was organised by Brantwood’s new art teacher, Mrs Reed, who joined the school in September. “Art trip like these provide the girls with the opportunity to observe artwork at first hand and to experience the scale of the work, something you don’t get from art books. Trips enrich the curriculum and enhance the students’ experience.” Mrs Marriott, Headteacher and Mrs Swales, artist-in-residence, also accompanied the party. The girls were a credit to the school and their parents. We were particularly proud of their contributions to the group discussions with the guide.

As the trip drew to a conclusion, a helicopter flew above the party. The guide informed the students and teachers that it may be an interested art collector coming to view and possible purchase a piece of art…
