The Junior School

The Junior School at Brantwood follows the Key Stage 2 curriculum and continues to develop our girls into confident learners, increasingly independent and able to deal with more challenging work and a broadening curriculum which involves an increasing amount of specialist teaching.

Class sizes continue to be small, typically no more than 16 and averaging about 12 with Form Teachers responsible for pastoral care. The Deputy Head Teacher, Mrs Hewson, has responsibility for the Junior and Infant Departments and oversees pastoral and curricular matters. Detailed Curriculum statements are available for every class and given to parents at the start of each year.

Year 6 is an important transitional stage when girls are prepared for life in the Senior School. Girls are given additional responsibilities and the opportunity to develop leadership skills as Junior School Prefects, on the School Council and by becoming increasingly involved in the House system. Before girls go into the Senior School, we invite them to an Induction Day when they will meet their new teachers, new fellow pupils and get the chance to experience a typical day in Year 7.

In a small school staff are familiar to all the girls in school, we regularly meet together for Assembly and many events involve the whole school. Visitors often comment on how at ease even the youngest girls are with adults and the Senior School girls and this contributes towards a happy and productive working and social environment.
