Lord Mayor to Visit Brantwood

At the Brantwood Governors' meeting last Tuesday evening, it was agreed that the school would support the Lord Mayor's charity established to rebuild a residential girls school that was destroyed in the earthquake in Bagh, Kashmir, Pakistan.

Following the earthquake that devastated the area killing more than 80,000 people, a delegation from Sheffield went to see what they could do to help. In Bagh, they came across the ruins of a regional, residential school where over 288 pupils and staff had been killed.

The country was working hard to rebuild the basic infrastructure - water, electricity, roads and health services were the priority, with education coming last. The delegation decided that they would raise funds to rebuild the school and re-name it "The Sheffield Girls' College". They need to raise over £300k.

In the first instance, Brantwood will be raising money to sponsor a classroom for £1,597 (which will have a name plaque on it) but it is hoped that a longer term relationship can be built with friendships developed between the girls of Brantwood and Sheffield Girls' College, not only by working to raise the funds to sponsor the room but also maybe through letters and even emails in the future.

Brantwood is delighted that the Lord Mayor Jackie Drayton will be visiting the school on Tuesday, 1st May at 2.50pm to speak to the girls in person about the project.
