Girls Raise Awareness for Darfur
Girls at a Sheffield School are raising awareness for the Genocide in Darfur by selling purple wristbands to raise money for the campaign.
The Year 9 pupils
from Brantwood School have so far raised £130 from selling the wristbands,
after visiting the Beth Shalom Holocaust Centre in Nottinghamshire.
As part of their Religious Studies topic the girls visited the Holocaust Centre to find out more about Genocide.
Brantwood Religious Studies teacher Kim Wright said, “The girls learned that there have been 60 cases of genocide since 1945, and that it is happening right now in Darfur. 2.5 million people are homeless and dependent on handouts.
“After hearing this, the girls decided to work with Beth Shalom to sell wristbands to raise awareness for the campaign.”
The pupils spent the day learning about the treatment of the victims of
the holocaust in World War Two, and why it happened. They also interviewed
holocaust survivor, Stephen Mendelssohn, who explained how he was ridiculed
and beaten simply because he was Jewish.
The Centre provides a range of facilities for people of all backgrounds
and persuasions to explore the history and implications of the Holocaust.
It houses a permanent exhibition on the Nazi period and offers space for
reflection in the memorial rose gardens.
Wristbands are being sold for £1 and can be purchased from the school by contacting Linda Lawrie on 0114 258 1747.
‘Beth Shalom’ means ‘house of peace’. It is a memorial to the victims of
the holocaust in WW2.
