Young Engineers Catapult to Success

Students at Brantwood took part in the Young Engineer of Britain Challenge this week using the construction and educational toy K’Nex to make catapults.

The Year 4, 5 and 6 girls had just one hour to make a sturdy construction that could fire a round plastic ball over a 5cm wall in the design and build challenge.

The competition was judged by visiting engineer Alan Varney from Brinsworth Training Centre.

Mr Varney said, “The students were judged on their catapult design, the actual construction and how the design matches the finished product. I was impressed with what I saw, the girls worked well together and some of their designs were pretty unique.”

The winning pair, Annam Afzal & Elizabeth Iles from Year 5, could possibly go through to the next round in the Young Engineer of Britain Challenge.

Younger classes also joined in on the challenge, making animals with the new Kid K’nex equipment.
